EATING CALCIUM-RICH DAIRY FOODS MAY halve your risk of developing ovarian cancer, according to, a recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Scientists interviewed more than 1,000 women about their diets; half were healthy and half had ovarian cancer. Women who consumed at least one serving a day of dairy products (especially low-fat milk)were up to 57 percent less likely to have developed ovarian cancer than those who consumed less than a serving a week.

Calcium probably works by countering hyperparathyroidism, a condition in which your parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone, which may promote tumor growth, says lead researcher Marc Goodman, Ph.D., M.P.H., a professor at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. However, this study found that only dairy sources of calcium provided protection; supplements and nondairy sources of calcium, like kale, did not.
