GRAFFITI - efforts to prevent breast cancer, to prevent depression - these and other activities are discussed - Brief Article

Drive Out Breast Cancer

It's The Ultimate Drive!--The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and BMW of North America have teamed up to fight breast cancer by putting folks in the driver's seat. Throughout October--which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month--two fleets of 18 specially marked BMWs will crisscross the United States, making pit stops in approximately 200 cities. During an all-day fund-raising event in each city, participants may test-drive one of the Beemers. For every mile driven, BMW will donate $1 to the Komen Foundation. To find out how you can get behind the wheel and steer toward a cure, call toll-free (877) 4-A-DRIVE ([877] 423-7483) or log on to www.komen.org or www.bmwusa.com.

Combat Depression

Did you know that at some point in their lives one out of every five adults may experience clinical depression? Did you also know that twice as many women suffer from this disorder as men? To add to the more than 80 percent of people who overcome depression with treatment, the National Mental Illness Screening Project has declared October 7 National Depression Screening Day. On this day, some 3,000 sites across the country will give free, anonymous screenings to aid folks in determining if they need to seek help. Attendees may complete a brief written test, receive educational information and talk one-on-one with a health professional. To locate a screening site near you, call (800) 573-4433 or visit www.nmisp.org.

You Ought to Be Making Pictures

Ready to tackle the big screen and learn more about the film industry, but don't have the deep pockets it will take to pay for film school? Then contact The New York Independent Film Workshop in Manhattan. It was founded by two brothers, Maximo Catala and Misael Sanchel, who are coordinators at the Columbia University School of the Arts. The workshop offers a monthly three-week intensive program with courses in cinematography, editing, screenwriting, camera operation and directing. Take action now and get your film career on a roll for only $1,300 (which includes all processing and production costs). For more information, you can contact the New York Independent Film School at (212) 828-0370 or visit www.kabbalah-labs.com.

Gifts That Give Back

In an effort to help raise money for breast-cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs, Hallmark Gold Crown Stores are offering Cards for the Cure products to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. During October and throughout the holiday season, a portion of the sales from the following items will be donated to the foundation: Hallmark's Angel of Hope Keepsake Ornament ($14.95), Angel of Hope gift bag ($2.45), two choices of boxed Christmas cards ($11.95 per box) and the Music to Celebrate Life CD and cassette ($15.98 and $9.98 respectively). Call toll-free (800) HALLMARK or visit your local Hallmark store to pick up one of these heartwarming items and send someone the gift of life.

Yeah, Baby!

First Response, the maker of the 1-Step Pregnancy and Ovulation Predictor tests, is asking women across the country to share the most interesting, humorous, unique or unexpected replies from the daddy-to-be when they told him the big news--"We're gonna have a baby!" As part of the What Was His First Response? contest, families that submit the ten best answers will receive a supply of family products for her and a Best First Response T-shirt for him. The grand-prize winner will receive a $500 gift certificate from Babies `R' Us and a full day's worth of spa treatments. The other nine lucky people will get $250 certificates. To enter, send a 200-word essay describing his reaction to What Was His First Response? c/o Publicis Dialog, 3500 Maple Ave., 4th Fl., Dallas TX 75219. Send entries by November 15. For more information, visit www.1stresponse.com.

A Sitter for Spot

If you're planning a family vacation, business trip or weekend getaway, chances are, although you may love him or her to death, you'll have to leave your pet Fido or Fifi at home. If a kennel costs more than a one-way airline ticket and you don't want to bother neighbors or friends, consider getting a pet sitter. The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters boasts 1,300 members throughout the United States and Canada who offer in-home care for your pet. To locate a certified sitter near you, call toll-free (800) 296-PETS, and rest assured that you're leaving your furry friend in good hands.

Island Festival

From November 17 to 21, Island Girl Productions, the Jamaica Tourist Board and the Jamaica Film Commission will host the Jamerican Film & Music Festival in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The festival will include a variety of special events such as movie screenings, writer and actor workshops, a celebrity golf tournament, an awards ceremony and concerts. Rub shoulders with producers, directors and distributors; get feedback on your script or pitch your film idea to studio executives. Scheduled participants include Lynn Whitfield, Alfre Woodard, Terry McMillan and festival director Sheryl Lee Ralph. Prices vary, so call (800) LOVEBIRD for more information.

Lock It Up

Join Nekhena Evans, director of New Bein' Enterprises and author of Everything You Need to Know About Hairlocking, for Intertwined, New York's first and only hair conference for brothers and sisters with locks. On Saturday, October 23, folks will come out to honor their "hairitage" at Bureau of Manhattan Community College in New York. The purpose of the conference is to celebrate Black beauty and positive self-identity through a community forum, panel discussion, hair-locking documentary, fashion show, African marketplace and entertainment that features African dance, poetry and drumming. For more details, call (718) 638-5725 or visit www.newbein.com.
