JOHN COOLEY III

CHENEY

Gathering for John J. Cooley III, 57, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at his home in Cheney.

Mr. Cooley died Tuesday from injuries suffered in a helicopter accident in Mead. He was born in Savannah, Ga.

In l966 he enlisted in the Army and began his training to become a helicopter pilot.

He served in Vietnam as a warrant officer and piloted gunships. After his discharge from the service, he continued to fly helicopters for several companies, working in Saudi Arabia, Ecuador and the Gulf of Mexico.

Mr. Cooley was flying fire contracts in northern California in 1974 when he met his wife, Mary Ann. They were married in 1976 and traveled extensively throughout the West while Mr. Cooley continued flying helicopters.

In 1979 he was hired by the Bonneville Power Administration and flew for the BPA's transmission design organization.

In 1983 he and his wife settled in the Spokane area, and he flew helicopter line patrol for the BPA in Eastern Washington, Idaho and Montana.

At the time of the accident he was piloting a BPA helicopter and pulling sock line for the BPA on the Grand Coulee-Bell Line.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife; and two sisters, Grace Schofield of Atlanta and Nancy Smith of Savannah.

JOHN HILL SR.

SPOKANE

Memorial service for John A. Hill Sr., 68, will be Saturday at 9 a.m. at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North.

Mr. Hill, who was born in Cut Bank, Mont., moved to Spokane in 1940. He died Saturday.

He graduated from Gonzaga Prep in 1953.

He served in the Air Force Air Police and was a veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Hill had owned Hill's Automotive in Spokane since 1984.

He enjoyed boating, camping, fishing, road trips, motorcycling and snowmobiling.

He was a 30-year member of the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Marlene; seven sons, Edward, Clyde and John Hill Jr., all of Nine Mile Falls, Tim Hill and Tim Clark, both of Spokane, Mike Hill of Spanaway, Wash., and David Clark of Seattle; three siblings, Jim and Bud Hill and Betty Marx; and nine grandchildren.

ELLA EATON

SPOKANE

No service will be held for Ella (Liland) Eaton, 90. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Eaton, who was born in Govan, Saskatchewan, died Aug. 10.

She graduated from West Valley High School and attended St. Luke's Nursing School.

Mrs. Eaton was a nurse at Orofino (Idaho) General Hospital.

During World War II she and her husband, Jim Eaton, had a charter fishing business on Lake Pend Oreille, first at Bayview and later at Garfield Bay.

She fished commercially for blueback for a time.

The couple also had an automotive body shop, Auto Body Rebuild, in Sandpoint.

They retired to Fry Creek and later to Gold Hill.

After her husband died she returned to Spokane Valley.

Mrs. Eaton enjoyed traveling, fishing, water exercise, playing pool and bingo, needlepoint, canning and making wine.

Survivors include a son, Larry Eaton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

ELSIE PETERSON

ADDY, WASH.

Memorial service for Elsie B. Peterson, 93, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Chewelah, Wash. Danekas Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Peterson, a lifelong resident of the Addy, Wash., area, died Sunday.

She was born and raised in Addy and graduated from Jenkins High School in Chewelah. She later attended Cheney Normal School.

She taught for a year at the Mountain Home School, a one-room school at upper Dry Creek near Blue Creek, Wash.

In 1931 she married Evald Peterson, and the couple made their home in the Addy area.

Mrs. Peterson was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Addy Women's Club and the Addy Grange.

She enjoyed fishing, gardening, bunka, sewing and traveling.

Her husband died in 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Valdine Collinge of Wenatchee; a sister, Marguerite Menegas of Chewelah; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

DIANE (WEBSTER) TATTERSON

DES MOINES, WASH.

Graveside service for Diane Maureen (Webster) Tatterson, 55, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Sandpoint. Lakeview Funeral Home in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Tatterson, who was born in Moscow, Idaho, died Aug. 12.

She grew up and attended school in Moscow and later received a teaching degree from the University of Idaho.

She taught business at Sandpoint High School from 1972 until 1978 and moved to Des Moines, where she worked for Boeing Aircraft for several years.

She retired five years ago.

Mrs. Tatterson was known for her patience and a bright smile.

She had a passion for quilting and enjoyed teaching the skill to family and friends.

Survivors include two children, Eric Tatterson of Des Moines and Stacy Young of Chelan, Wash.; a brother, Allan Webster of Moscow; a sister, Betty Taylor of Auburn, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

J.F. 'SKIP' HENSLER

NEWPORT, WASH.

Memorial service for John Fisher "Skip" Hensler, 64, will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home.

Mr. Hensler, a resident of Spokane for 17 years before moving to the Newport area in 1983, died Saturday. He was born in Williamsport, Penn.

He enlisted in the Army in 1959 and earned his Parachutist Badge at Fort Bragg, NC. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division until his honorable discharge in 1964.

Mr. Hensler worked as a trucker until settling in Spokane and attending Spokane Community College and Gonzaga University. He started working for Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. in 1967, earning his Certified Life Underwriter certificate in 1976.

He enjoyed hunting, beekeeping, huckleberry-picking and making home-brews.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Christy; a stepdaughter Tamara Anne McKay; and two brothers, Bill Hensler of Dolores, Colo., and Charles Hensler of Cogan Station, Penn.

JANE SANDBERG

SPOKANE

Private service will be held for Jane Ann Sandberg, 83. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sandberg, who died Friday, was born in Yakima.

She graduated from Lincoln High School in Portland and graduated from Oregon Dental Hygienist School in Portland.

She married Orien Sandberg in 1941.

Mrs. Sandberg worked as a dental hygienist in Portland.

She was a 16-year resident of Spokane and was a member of St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church in the Spokane Valley.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Sandberg of Swan Valley, Idaho, and Ward Sandberg of Spokane; nine grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

THOMAS GERARD

SPOKANE

Memorial service for Thomas John Gerard, 68, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Paschal Roman Catholic Church. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gerard, who was born in Billings, died Monday.

He attended Gonzaga Prep and received a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Gonzaga University and a master's degree from Oregon State University.

He had owned Thomas Gerard and Associates Inc. since 1971.

Mr. Gerard was a member of St. Paschal Catholic Church for 38 years.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Rosemary; four sons, Thomas, David, Jonathon and Mark Gerard, and a daughter, Sally Gerard, all of Spokane; a brother, George Gerard of Libby, Mont.; and 12 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or Horizon Hospice.

MARCIA BETTINGER

SPOKANE

Memorial service for Marcia Mae Coleman Bettinger, 69, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bettinger, who was born in Sandpoint, died Aug. 12.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1953.

In earlier years she lived in Northport, Wash., where she worked in the Parrot Room Hotel and Restaurant.

When she moved back to Spokane, she met Chuck Bettinger,

and they were married in 1959.

For several years they ran an adult-care home together, and after his death in 1998, Mrs. Bettinger continued to run the home.

She enjoyed gardening and loved flowers.

Survivors include three siblings, Allen Coleman of Northport, Linda Hunt of Chattaroy and Persha Hill of Kent, Wash.; and her stepmother, Geneva Kenerson of Colville.

LORANE HENKE PERRY

SPOKANE

Service for Lorane Henke Perry, 68, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Perry, who died Aug. 12, was born and raised in Priest River, Idaho, where she attended high school.

Her husband, Carl Henke, died in 2003, after 48 years of marriage.
