Apple unveils 'iMac to go' - the iBook PowerPC-based notebook computer - Brief Article - Product Announcement
Apple Computer Corp. has unveiled its consumer laptop, iBook - a portable version of the iMac with a battery life of six hours, wireless Internet connection capability, and a price tag of US$1,599. Apple's acting CEO Steve Jobs rolled out the much-hyped laptop during his keynote speech at Macworld Expo in New York. Calling it the "iMac to go," Jobs said the centrepoint of the iBook design is its optional wireless networking capacity for cable-free Internet access.
The Airport wireless networking card is an optional feature of the iMac, which comes with two built-in antennae and an internal slot to accept the card. IBook also has a 12-inch screen, a PowerPC G3 microprocessor, a built-in 56-Kbps modem and Ethernet networking capabilities.
