Top Tip: ATI driver compatibility with Star Wars Galaxies?

Question from Bagwagel "I have a friend that was buying a new Video Card so he can play Star Wars galaxies. He was using a ATI Radeon 7000 and when he downloaded new drivers to play it since It wont play with out a DirectX9 Download, the game would crash after 30 min everytime and shutsdown his PC. He tried multiple times to play again but everytime it would shutdown. THinking he would have to buy a new Video Card that is Direct X9 Optimized he bought a GeFOrce FX 5200 and he forgot to Uninstall the ATI Driver so now it frezzes when he plays instead. I have 2 questions to go with this...

1. How does he Delete the Old ATI Driver without INstalling the card over again since his old ATI Card is now broken. (It was shorted out)

2. Is it a Driver conflict he has with Star Wars Galaxies that doesent allow him to play. He has done a FUll virus scan and no virus are present in his PC. THanks

Answer from dippy_skoodlez "I think there are tutorials on www.guru3d.com on how to remove drivers and such.. but DONT forget.. its STILL in beta 4. expect bugs. Oh, and the FX5200 is not the best choice... my friend has a 128mb Ti4200, and it will out perform it by quite a bit... he has had no problems, other than basic gameplay bugs with his..."

Answer from Altcon "Tell your friend to go to the control panel, click add/remove software and uninstal anything that says ATi on it (ussually its drivers and an Ati control panel), if he still gets crashes he can try to run regedit (by start-run regedit) and search for anything that says Ati and deleting it (this is assuming there is no additional ATi hardware in his computer).Other than that make sure hes got the latest DX installed (currently dx 9.0b) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=141d5f9e-07c1-462a-baef-5eab5c851cf5&DisplayLang=en .

As far as I know you don't need dx9 specific hardware to run dx9 games, just hardware that's fast enough in general- the radeon 7000 is a terribly slow card which doesn't even support t&l (how he plyed with it is beyond me).Last but not least get the latest drivers from nvidia http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp ."
