Dell Canada Inc. HAS LAUNCHED three new Axim handhelds loaded with Intel processors and Windows Mobile 2003 second edition software for Pocket PC.

Two of the three configurations offer optional Bluetooth and WiFi 802.11b capabilities for networking with computer systems and Bluetooth-enabled devices such as mobile phones, GPS receivers, keyboards and other handhelds.

Integrated WiFi enables users to connect wirelessly to the Internet at hotspots such as hotels and airports.

The Dell Axim X30 comes with Intel's PXA270 processor. Customers can choose between two processor speeds: 312 MHz or 624 MHz. The latter is said to be the fastest processor speed currently available for hand-held devices.

The unit is also equipped with Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software, which enables users to switch between portrait and landscape display orientation.

All three configurations include built-in Secure Digital I/O slot, a 3.5-in. transflective TFT color display with 240x320 (QVGA) resolution, a headphone jack recorder capability, and scroll dial.

Other features of the Axim X30 include: five-way navigation button, four program buttons (calendar, contacts, inbox and home), voice record capability and a media player.

The handheld is equipped with an audio controller AC-97 codec chip, WM9705 sound chip, stereo conversion 16-bit stereo, full-duplex record and playback and an integrated microphone and speaker.

Prices for the Axim 30 start at $279 for a non-wireless configuration, $379 for a combination wireless capability, and $449 for a device loaded with the 624 MHz processor.

The first two configurations come with a travel sync cable, while the $449 device includes a sync/recharge cradle with an extra battery charge slot that accommodates either the spare standard battery (950 mAh) or the optional high-capacity (1800 mAh) battery.

The devices ship with a cradle or sync cable, an AC adapter and power cord, a protective jacket, system documentation & companion CD.
