Accelerated nursing degree program

The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing will begin offering an accelerated degree program next winter in an attempt to help address the state's nursing shortage, the school announced Tuesday.

Beginning in January, the School of Nursing will offer a nursing education program to approximately 50 students who already hold bachelor's degrees in other disciplines. The 17-month accelerated option will produce more nurses at a time when Maryland and other states are facing a continued shortage of nurses.

Sandra Angell, the School of Nursing's associate dean for student affairs, said Hopkins has always "heeded the social imperative to respond in times of crises," and that it's time for the school "to take the lead once again."

Hopkins officials said they have seen increased interest in the school's nursing programs, especially among applicants who already have earned other college degrees.

"We have expanded existing class sizes to the maximum, but that alone will not be enough to lessen the shortage," Angell said in a statement.
