2002 slate of candidates - Candidates

This article lists the candidates for AORN national offices. The annual election will be held during the 2002 Congress on Thursday, April 25, from 7 to 10:30 AM in Rooms AR1 and AR2 of the Anaheim Convention Center. Results will be announced that same day at the second session of the House of Delegates, which will be held from 1:30 to 3 PM in the ballrooms of the convention center. Results also will be available at AORN Headquarters and posted on the AORN web site.

All AORN members may use this list of candidates to indicate their candidate preferences to their delegates, but only authorized delegates may vote. Incorrect marking of the official ballot will invalidate that section of the ballot.

Additional nominations may be made from the floor at the first session of the House of Delegates, which begins at 1 PM on Monday, April 22, in the ballrooms of the convention center. Before nomination, the eligibility of additional nominees must be verified, and consent-to-serve forms must be completed. All candidates will appear at the Meet the Candidates session, which will be held Sunday, April 21, from 11 AM to 12:15 PM in the ballrooms. Members also can meet with candidates at the Nominating Committee booth. Delegates are required to attend all business-related sessions; alternates and other AORN members are encouraged to attend.

The following pages contain biographical data and election statements for all candidates. Biographical data are limited to the past 10 years, so professional activities before 1992 are not reflected. Space limitations do not permit listing candidates' elected or appointed positions in local nursing or other professional associations. Members who have questions about candidates' speaking engagements, published works, student status, or other professional activities can direct them to those candidates at the Candidates' Town Hall Meeting, Sunday, April 21 from 1:30 to 3 PM, following the Meet the Candidates session.

In the election statements that follow, candidates were given free reign to address professional issues facing nursing in general or perioperative nursing in particular.

Election statement. Our very soul was shaken with the experience on Sept 11, 2001, yet Americans and citizens of the free world linked hands and hearts, uniting in an outpouring of support. We, the nursing profession, are the heart and soul of our work environments. We find ways to remove barriers and welcome intense dialogue to make quality informed decisions. Our practice arenas are extremely responsive, capable in crises, and led by effective planners. Prevention becomes our best strategy for our future.

In support of that strategy, our organization wrestles with several key issues, including nursing shortages; organizational structure; responsibilities of leaders; the work of the Board of Directors, House of Delegates, and the best use of volunteer time; avenues for increasing information flow; and potential expansion of voting opportunity to all members. Technological advancements permit us to explore options and consider diverse opinions. Our future requires an organization with rapid and flexible decision making that accurately reflects members' views.

Ultimately, individual members make the difference. You are the one who invited the young nurse to the meeting. You are the one who risked communicating a divergent opinion in online dialogue. You are the one who held the hand of the young teenager in the OR who may never see her twenties.

Each of us is responsible for marketing and fostering our profession by supporting and expanding student involvement in every activity and reaching out to young people, spotlighting not only the need for more nurses entering the profession, but also exploring what value the profession offers each as individuals. I am proud of and energized by the young nurses with whom I work. They are decisive, articulate people, willing to explore, comfortable with technology, and certain that there is a vibrant future in perioperative nursing.

My commitment and passion for AORN has grown and deepened through continual service offered by our Association my entire career. I pursue the opportunity to serve you as President, and I seek and welcome your advice and support. My core beliefs include honoring our past, engaging in and understanding the present, and staying focused on our future, for our future rests with our actions of today and tomorrow's nurses.

America is a blend. Nursing is a blend. Our Association is a blend. When I look at the AORN icon of a hand passing scissors to hand, I know our role is affirmed and our future is real.
