Get a room! The Out Traveler revved up five gay-centric hotel booking engines to see how well they perform
GayGuide.net Though its ill-defined home page barely reveals the existence of a booking engine, after you click the tiny "hotels" link you can search an extensive range of hotels by value, quality, and price. Too bad you can't search by gay-owned or gay friendly. Grade: B
GayRes.com While you can view hotel prices in a surprising array of global currencies, you can't sort by lowest price. On the plus side, each hotel is selected for its gay welcoming vibe. Grade: B-
Travelocity.com/gay travel With gay-specific articles and listings, links to last-minute travel deals, a slide show of gay-friendly hotels, and a smart site wide redesign (not to mention the Amelie-inspired misadventures of the Roaming Gnome), this queer microsite is a definite bookmark. Gracle: A-
Orbitz.com/gay travel Orbitz's gay microsite includes a travel rewards program with great deals on gay cruises and tours. The booking engine is just a mirror of the mainstream site with no gay-specific information: however, speed, functionality and navigation (not to mention industry clout) make Orbitz a true powerhouse. Grade: A-
PurpleRoofs.com The only site tithe bunch with an interactive map (is the world really that mauve?), this is a superb directory. Though you can't book a room directly from the site, you can make reservation requests and link to official hotel and B&B sites for the final transaction. Mention Purple Roofs and you may end up with a 5% to 10% discount. Grade: A
