Costco now offers free nitrogen installation and fill-ups for life with tire purchases. Inflating tires with nitrogen rather than.compressed air (about 78 percent nitrogen itself) is supposed to prolong tire life, improve gas mileage and keep tires inflated longer. The retailer installed nitrogen equipment in all of its U.S. and Canadian stores last summer, then rolled out the program during the fall. This trend is generating interest among other aftermarket retailers, such as Pep Boys, which is reportedly testing a similar option.
