Winners in the Arizona Masonry Guild's 12th Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards competition were recently announced at a special banquet in Phoenix. The program honored 10 projects for outstanding masonry design, workmanship, and creativity with the use of brick, block, or natural stone.

The Gold Trowel (top honor) winner was the Campbell Cliffs, Tucson. The residence (right) was honored "for the outstanding way in which the well-crafted stonework interbites with the sorrounding landscape, rather than overwhelming it. The masonry contractor and architect was Line and Space LLC, and the masonry supplier was Dunbar Stone.

Three Silver Trowel Awards were given.

* Handmaker Jewish Services for the Aging--Rubin Campus, Tucson; masonry contractor, Foley Tile & Masonry: masonry supplier; AZ Block 2000; architect, Gresham and Beach with Lizard Rock Designs LLC

* Poggio Paradiso, Scottsdale: masonry contractor, Ameris Construction; masonry supplier, Superlite Block; architect, RD Architecture LLC

* Westside Multi-Generational Center, Tempe: masonry contractor, Vickers-Hari Contracting; masonry supplier, Western Block; architect, Architekton Three Honor Awards were presented.

* Church of St. Thomas More, Glendale: masonry contractor, Rhino Masonry; masonry supplier, Yavapai Block; architect, DLR Group

* Downing residence, Tucson: masonry contractor, Hard Rock Masonry; masonry supplier, Young Block; architect, Ibarra Rosario Design

* Adult Center, Glendale: masonry contractor; Ruggles Masonry; masonry supplier. Superlite Block: architect, Hunt & Caraway

Three Merit Awards were given.

* Sky Harbor Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Station No. 19, Phoenix: masonry contractor, Sun Valley Masonry; masonry suppliers, Superlite Block and Phoenix Brick Yard; architect, Lawrence Enyart Architects

* Barnes & Noble. Phoenix: masonry contractor, Rock & Stone Mfg.; masonry supplier, Western Block; architect, Nelsen Architects
