United Airlines to reinstate service charges on employee tickets
AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
United Airlines will reinstate service charges for all employee tickets from 1 January 2003.
The move is reportedly part of an attempt to achieve USD1.4bn in non-labour cost savings, and will cover the USD32m annual cost of providing employee travel benefits. The new service charges also apply to United retirees, but do not apply to employee tickets for United Express flights.
The airline will also alter the way it calculates fares for employee companions travelling with the airline. From 1 March 2003, employee companions will receive a 90% discount off full-fare economy-class tickets.
The carrier - which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on 9 December 2002 - must reduce its costs in order to meet agreements for funding, reported Reuters.
